Design for “X”, what comes first the “X” or the Product?

Design for “X” (D4-X) is a common concept to the product designer where “X” can represent a myriad of factors (assembly, maintenance, etc.) but how do they know which “X”s to focus on?

The key here is to get a grasp of the product and how it will fit within its environment.

For many small companies where the designer is intimately connected with the product they may think they fully understand what they are designing for. However it is the author’s contention that especially in these circumstances the designer needs to take a step back and evaluate the needs and demands on the product…..
